Vilayet Habesh

Geography:

Vilayet Habesh compromised of the Horn of Africa and was bordered in the north by the Red Sea. This Velayet consists of modern-day Eritrea, Djibouti and Somaliland. A mountain range cuts right through this area called the Great Rift Valley Range. The Eastern region of this province is quite divers in its landforms. The North is really hilly, while the rest is like a semi-desert.

Importance, Natural Resources, Manufactured Goods

The Ottoman colonies in present-day Eritrea and Somaliland were different because they didn’t produce anything important even though the soil was very fertile. The Ottomans didn’t put much effort into developing the area instead made the local tribes work for them, by keeping invaders out. They were colonized to protect hajjis (pilgrims going to the cities of Makkah and Madinah) at sea from pirates and also to give the Ottoman Empire a monopoly on the Red Sea and a sea route to India.
